We have a position open for an Engineering R&D Technician in our EV Division:

Engineering R&D Technician – Automotive Performance

AEM Performance Electronics, Hawthorne, CA

AEM is seeking an Engineering R&D Technician to join our AEM EV application engineering team.  The team is developing Electric Vehicle (EV) Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) applications for the automotive performance aftermarket.  Previous EV experience is not required – AEM will provide thorough EV technical training.

Overall Responsibility:

Based on the direction given by engineering project managers, execute work directives to include prototyping, building, and installing EV system components for testing and development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Background in aftermarket automotive, performance automotive, or motorsports with strong hands-on mechanical inclination and experience
  • Experience with prototype wire harness construction including a good understanding of harness schematics, pinouts, and layout diagrams
  • Experience with automotive electronics such as engine management, data acquisition, or similar type systems
  • Familiarity with automotive CAN bus networking
  • Experience with basic automotive electronics tools like DVMs, test probes, etc., and basic troubleshooting techniques
  • Proficient with basic 2D CAD software
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite including Excel and Word

Desired Qualifications:

  • Direct experience with EV builds or system installations including traction motors, high voltage systems and control electronics
  • More in-depth CAN bus experience including CAN bus “sniffing” or reverse engineering
  • Familiarity with advanced automotive electronics tools like oscilloscopes and signal generators, etc., and advanced troubleshooting techniques
  • Knowledge of motorsport wiring conventions and harness construction techniques
  • Experience with vehicle chassis dynamometers
  • Basic metal fabrication skills such as cutting, grinding, drilling, welding, etc.
  • Experience with SolidWorks 3D modeling software
