Aem Tuner keeps reseting?

Hey guys, over this winter I had upgraded to the new v3.2 software.  At the same time I added 2 bosch knock sensors, a supra v160 speed sensor, and a clutch switch wired up to a 6050 box.  Since then, I have been having issues with aem tuner reseting itself.  The car doesnt seem to react when the software resets, which leads me to believe its an Tuner problem and not a box issue?

If anyone has any suggestions on trying to figure out whats causing the reset, Im all ears.   Im going to try a new usb cable tonight just to rule that out.

Thanks

Ryan

Can you better describe what

Can you better describe what you mean by 'reset'?  Are you losing comms with the EMS?  If so, when specifically?

Sorry, I guess I should have

Sorry, I guess I should have described this a little better.  It drops communication with the EMS, then automaticly re-establishes a connection.  There doesnt really seem to be any pattern or particular time it drops out, it seems to be pretty random.  Ive tried wiggeling the USB cable to see if it was cable related with no luck, but like I mentioned, Im going to try a new cable tonight to rule it out.

I'll see if I can take a quick cell phone video tonight while Im out tinkering with the tune in the garage.  I'll also take a log and see if anything maybe shows up in there.  I was also planning to disconnect each of the knock sensors, VSS, and also the clutch switch, one by one to see if it was something in one of the sensors that was causing the issue.

Something Kurt had mentioned to me prior to installing my VSS sensor, was to ground the sensor to a normal chassis ground.  I had forgotten to do this, and ended up hooking it up to the VSS (-) through the box.  I will try disconnecting the VSS first and see if this could be the issue.

All the things you mentioned

All the things you mentioned are good things to check.  No real need for a video - we know what dropped comms looks like. wink

The most common cause of comms problems is usually ignition noise.  Have you changed your spark plugs recently?  Did you happen to start using non-resistor race plugs?  I wouldn't say this if it wasn't true but we had a customer call up with comms problems and after checking and trying everything he replaced his old spark plugs with new ones of the exact same brand and part number and his problem went away.

If you're going to spend the $$$ to get a new USB cable, don't buy a cheapy cable.  Instead get one with ferrite noise traps.  Just having a better USB cable will make a noticable difference.

I had a chance to play with

I had a chance to play with it the past couple days.  I started by unplugging the sensors that I had added one by one, with no success.  It still seams to be dropping the comms.  I am using a non-resister style plug (ngk R5671A-#) but I have been using them in this setup its entire lifespan.  I will try changing the plugs out for a fresh set tonight and see if they helps.

As for the usb cable, Im not really familiar with this "ferrite noise trap".  Can you elaborate, or show me a picture of how to identify if one has this or not?  Any recommendations on a specific brand ?  Anything else I should start looking at for the comms issue?  It has been pretty frustrating trying to datalog/tune with the laptop lately, to say the least lol.

Thanks again for the help.

I'm surprised that you've gotten away with using race plugs at all.  That's pretty much a no-no in EFI.

I swapped out the plugs for a brand new set, and the problem is still there.  Myself as well as a few other guys have been using these plugs for awhile now without any problems, I wasnt aware that some guys have trouble with them.

So at this point is there anything else you can suggest I try?  I am running out of ideas as to whats causing the issue.

Are comms dropped during

Are comms dropped during cranking or while the engine is running and under load?  If and when comms drop during cranking, does the engine still start and run correctly?  Did you try using an upgraded USB cable?  Perhaps a different USB port?  Awfully strange that it'd be fine and then all of a sudden start behaving badly.

Like I had mentioned before,

Like I had mentioned before, there is no rhym or reason as to when it will drop the comms.  Its happened during cranking, while cruising at light loads, or while under full throttle and full load.  When the comms do drop, it has no effect on the car, it still continues on doing what it always does.  As you can imagine, it just becomes frustrating trying to PC log, as its constantly kicking you out of the logging.

I am just waiting on my new USB cable to show up, no one local had one with the  ferrite noise traps so I had to order one in.  I havent tried different usb ports but thats something I will definitly try.  Its an older laptop, so maybe its just a sloppy port from being used and abused lol.

Thanks again for all the help.  Ill try a few things this weekend and update this thread.  Im also going to try a completly different laptop and see if that helps as well.

After buying a new cable, and

After buying a new cable, and trying out a new laptop, I have come to the conclusion that it is the USB ports on my laptop that have been giving me problems this whole time.  I guess it being an older laptop, used and abused, it is time to buy a new one.
