Cam/crank selection

I just switched to a EPM and a coil on plug setup. Had some issues at first but got it up and running. A couple of days later the car wouldn't start and I was getting 0 syncstate and 0 probably of start. It started after cranking for awhile and waiting for several minutes in-between. And then it was fine?

 

I was looking through the wizard and happened to click on cam/crank menu. I noticed that the sensor selection for the Epm was blank. Meaning that there was nothing selected as a crank sensor but the car was running. And in the ignition sync menu my trigger offset was at 0 when it should be at 109. Again the car was running at the time. 

 

So is this normal? Should the crank/cam selection and the trigger offset show what has been selected everytime I open the wizard? 

Or is it supposed to be blank like it was?

It will be blank and here's why. The EPM is an entirely universal piece. There is no pre-set CSA or TO values since we have no idea what or how the EPM is being installed/clocked. The wizard performs two functions - it sets the values that you select and it checks the values in the software in order to show that it's matched. Once you sync your timing, your CAS and TO values are going to be different from the base EPM values of 0 that are set by the wizard. Well now that CSA and TO are no longer zero, the wizard no longer matches thus the wizard shows blank since it's now unmatched. It would be a mistake to go back and re-select EPM in the wizard again just to get it to say matched because this will zero out your CSA and TO values.

There's more to this actually

There's more to this actually.  We set the criteria in the wizard for what qualifies as being matched or not.  The TO limit for the EPM is 30° and here's why.  The proper way to sync timing is to use Cam Sync Adjustment has a coarse "tooth" adjustment and then Trigger Offset as a fine degrees adjustment that should be limited to the number of degrees between crank teeth.  In this case, th EPM simulates a 12 tooth crank trigger thus there are 30° between teeth and which is what the wizard limits TO to for matching purposes.  So technically, TO for the EPM shouldn't ever be more than 30.  If a TO value of 109 gets your timing correctly synced, setting CSA to 3 and TO to 19 will get you the same ignition sync point and make the wizard say matched.  Best of both worlds.
