Dash Designer software feature requests

There are some missing features from the software that makes creating designs very limiting. Here are some features we would like to see!

1. Layers
For example, The normal bar tach option within the dash designer software is really limiting to different bar tach styles. If I were to create a custom design layer of a uniquely shaped bar tach to slap on top of a aem created bar tach, the inner transparent part of my design layer (think of it as a stencil) would turn black when imported into the aem software. This creates an issue since I cannot place a design layer on top of a normal bar tach(created in dash design software)  to achieve the specific design. This also applies to icons I create in my graphic design software. If I am creating custom rpm numbers, it creates a black background around the number, killing the design. The software doesn't seem to like transparent backgrounds on designs.

2.Circular bar tach gauge
I've had many ideas on designs but cannot finish them since there is no bar tach in the form of a traditional circular gauge.

3.Undo/Redo buttons
There were times where I accidentally made a change that I wanted to undo.

4. G-Meter gauge creator
Most of us have the VDM module, having an option to easily create a G-meter gauge would be nice to have, to take advantage of vdm module.  I tried creating a design of one but the crosshair would not align with the center of my gmeter design.
Check out the C7 cluster as an example:

or GTS cluster as an example:

5. Variety of different tach needle, speedometer/circular-gauge bezel designs For users without a graphic design background.

6. Sharing vector files of the AEM designs found within the software. -To be able to change colors, or make small tweaks of the supplied designs.

7. More bar tach styles, also being able to transform bar tachs to reshape them to our liking.

8. Animated splash screen.

9. Simplifying dynamic needle creator.

These are just some features that I would like to see, as well as, others I've talked too. Please consider adding these to AEM Dash Design software! I noticed many other competitors have these features already in their software for their digital displays. Let's make Dash Designer superior!

Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks for your feedback.  Many changes are planned including refined software and we're always adding new features and functions.  As you found, layered transparency isn't supported.  Active graphics are always on top - that's just a fundamental functionality of the dash currently.  The AEM line of CD dashes is by far the most affordable and feature rich dash on the market - affordability comes as a measure of cost cutting including not springing for the most expensive graphics processor thus there are some inherit limitations.  Back to your specific list:

Circular bar tach gauge - I've been wanting this as well.  I'll put it on the add list.

Undo - likely to be implemented in the refined software.

G-meter gauge creator - a possibility.  I'll provide a sample layout that already has a pretty nice working g-meter crosshair gauge in it.

Gauge design features - also possible.

Access to AEM design files - no problem.  We're going to have a release out soon so it probably won't make it in to that one but we have no problem releasing all our working design files.  They're all Illustrator and Photoshop files.

Bar tacho editor - would like to see this as well.  I have some ideas for implementation but it comes down to what the software guys can code.

Animated splash - not likely to happen due to processor limitations.  You can 'fake' the animation if you're creative though.

Simplifed needle creator - I envision something less tied to pixel offsets/spacing and more of a click and drag type operation.

Thanks again for your feedback and continued involvement.

Thank you for the response! That's true, the CD7 is pretty feature packed for the price for sure. I just was thinking of some ideas that would be nice to add if possible. I've been creating designs for the community to use, located in my other post. Got good feedback on them but was limited to the designs with missing support of some of those features listed. Thank you for considering these features.

I did open that gmeter file, thank you for that. If I were to downsize the gmeter smaller to fit into my current designs, would it ruin the function of it? or will it only work in the dead center of the screen?

You can resize and put it any

You can resize and put it any where you want but really it was meant to be an example of how you'd set one up. From that setup you should be able to then take those settings and adjust them for your own layouts.

Gotcha makes sense. I’ll play

Gotcha makes sense. I’ll play around with it and review the settings.

Another feature I forgot to list that would be cool is being able to emulate the tachs/values to make sure everything works alright when designing. Not sure if that’s possible

That will be sweet. Looking forward to the next software update ! Is that something that is planned to release soon?

Also I did notice a bug where the CD7 does restart randomly upon boot up.

Pull/partial transparency

Pull/partial transparency would have the biggest immediate impact on esthetics

Being able to have needles that "glow" (or look like anything other than a solid triangle, really), would make a big visual difference to the existing layouts

I agree !

I agree !

Also if it’s possible to smoothen out edges of values/text. I noticed they have jagged edges compared to text that I implement onto a design background.

One thing that has been driving me nuts lately is the dynamic needle placement. It’s so hard to get it centered and placed in the correct spots.

One of the tricks I have used

One of the tricks I have used is to design the base screen in photoshop at 1:1 with the needle already inserted and with sample numbers, then use a full screen capture of that with needles, numbers etc as the temporary background for the dash while doing the layout.

That's the trick I use to

That's the trick I use to make some of my designs. It's just that the dynamic needle placement within "aem dash design" takes a long time to get to sit correctly with a specific design(the start and end degree).
Just curious when will the refined software be released?

Greetings.

Greetings.

I'm sorry. My english is very bad((
Now I make a little project. Suzuki swift 1.6 n/a. Infinity 506, CD7 non logging, VDM, X series UEGO O2 sensor..

I have seen many Your works. Very good.
Is it possible to make design with acceleration test, 0-60, 0-100, 0-100-0, 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile etc like as racelogic vbox?

Thanks a lot!

That should be possible with

That should be possible with setting up a few different functions within the software that result with a 0-60 speed I'm sure but I'm unsure on where, to begin with that hmm

Any chance support will be

Any chance support will be added for sliders with a gradient?  I'm thinking for applications related to temp or pressure.  For instance coolant would be a slider with a color gradient going from blue to red.

Gradient slider would be

Gradient slider would be awesome for that sort of data!

Also,
-Custom dynamic needle graphics
-Multi-select/batch select
-Align/distribute tool
-Layers and transparency support would be a huge improvement - opens the door to creative designs
-Ability to disable alarm/screen change pages so that you have enough memory to run two extra screens.
-Add alarm flashing to horizontal/vertical bar tachos
-Ability to square off bar tachos - they seem to give off the appearance of a folded corner on a paper page.
-Allow the user to see the actual needle design/width/center draw within Dash Design software instead of thin lines.
-Adding password protection to layout files/limit amount of times a layout file can be uploaded/locking a layout file so that it can only be used on a serial number that you input (ability to reset the serial number lock when entered the password the original file creator inputted)

Firmware/Software bugs?
-GPS speed raising when the car is stationary
-Odometer counting upwards when the car is stationary on some dashes
-Dash crashing then reboots upon some bootups after design upload
-Design upload percentage not resetting after some uploads occasionally
-Design upload stuck on 99% or reports back with "done" when it didn't actually upload occasionally.
-Dash displays corrupted image until reselecting a different image and then selecting back to the one you want.
-Can't find the referenced logo or C++ exception error after selecting custom graphics, deleting unused graphics sometimes fixes this.
-The screen inside Dash Design flashes/distorts image/colors when moving the mouse around the screen.

I also would pay extra $ if AEM offered a higher end model of the CD7 with a higher quality screen(vibrant colors/sharper/anti-aliasing support), more power to run animations, sleek street enclosure that has a diffused led shift led bar, and plastic/glass screen face that is similar to how the 'AiM MXG" enclosure is built. - Also, have heard many other users request these things. 10" model would be sweet as well! The cd5 and cd7 are very budget friendly, would be nice to have a higher end model that of course would cost extra!

I take it most of these things have not been implemented yet....

Thanks

Overall I'm really impressed

Overall I'm really impressed with the depth of functionality of this software and I'm really just getting into it.  One thing I noticed is the install is a bit bloated.  It would be nice for users to have the option of downloading a bare bones install and grabbing the particular setups they need from your website vs an install with every app specific setup under the sun.  That's really the source of the bloat.

I'm running my DashDesign sub folder off a cloud drive so that I can access from any of the multiple PCs/laptops I'm running the software on.  I went through and deleted all the data I didn't need to cut down on size and it made me think to come here and suggest this option.

Also an option to check for updates to DashDesign or firmware of the dash within the software would be nice.

It would be a huge

It would be a huge improvement if we could upload our own files for needle options so we could create our own. The 1 needle option is really limiting to creating nice designs
