The EMS-4 DIY/FAQ - Look here first!!

As you can see, we now have a new forum and we're working on migrating some of the more useful pieces of information over from the old forum.  The old forum is no longer accessible to the general public so I've created PDF's from specific threads and am listing them here.  Additional info will be added as time permits.

Here are a number of different base cals.  Please be sure to read the cal notes for specific cal info.  These cals are only intended to properly set the Tooth Control settings and coil/injector control/phasing values and allow an engine to be cranked to establish 'Stat Sync'd'.  A majority of these cals have actually never been used to run an engine - they have simply been tested on a test bench to ensure that the ECU established Stat Sync'd and fired coils and injectors without errors.  These cals are in no way "tuned" and should not be used to start or run an engine.  AEM will provide no additional starting/running tuning support for these provided base cals.  Please consult with an experience tuning professional in order to fully tune your vehicle.  USE OF THESE CALS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

EMS-4 Power Up Issues

If you find that you have what appears to be a power up issue with your EMS-4, it's likely due to one of two things.  A failure to power up is usually indicated by outputs not turning on (ie no fuel pump prime at key on), cranking but no start, and not being able to comm up to the box along with a message saying "USB device not recognized".

Problem 1: incorrect wiring.  From pg 199 of the EMS-4 Install and Tuning Guide: The power input to the solenoid must not be connected directly to the battery or any full time voltage source. The power should come from a switched fused supply. See the EMS-4 System Diagram for more information.  What happens is if an output is connected to something that has permanent power, the power can backfeed into the EMS causing the processor to not shut down correctly when the EMS is turned off.  When the processor does not shut down correctly it will not start up correctly when turned back on and the EMS will not function.  Output devices such as relays or solenoids MUST be connected to a switched power source that turns off when the igntion is turned off.  If you suspect that you have this problem, BACK PROBE all of the populated pins in the ECU connector with the igntion turned OFF.  Find that circuit that has voltage present and this is your problem.  This problem is usually temporarily fixed when you disconnect and then reconnect the ECU connector as this cuts all power allowing the processor to fully shut down.

Problem 2: not using a password.  Unfortunately the EMS-4 does suffer from a small problem where it can go into a "frozen" state sometimes.  What specifically happens is that certain conditions will trigger the processor into non-operational mode during initial start up.  Once it's in this mode, no outputs will work and it may take a varying amount of time (10-30 minutes) before the EMS functions correctly again.  This gives the illusion of being temp related however it is not.  There is an easy fix for this problem and it's to simply assign a password to the cal.  When a password is assigned, the ECU goes through a different start up process which bypasses the process that can cause the frozen state.  Passwords do not need to be of any particular length or complexity; a simple single digit such a "1" or "a" will work.  If after assigning a password you continue to have a start up problem, you likely have a wiring problem - see Problem 1 above.
