Oil Pressure Sensor reading 3-4 PSI when sensor is not plugged in to anything

I recently received and installed (gauge only, not actually connect to the engine yet) an oil pressure gauge (AEM 30-0307 X-Series Oil Pressure Gauge). I am waiting to install it on the engine until my engine swap is done in a few months. I decided to hook up the sensor to validate its working (instead of just seeing SENS). It seems that the sensor is reporting 3-4PSI of oil pressure despite not actually being hooked up to anything at the moment. Is this normal? I'd expect it to be reading 0 and maybe 1 occasionally. Just want to make sure i'm not having an issue before I get this installed as then it will be a pain to remove. Thanks!

Hey Tweak,

Hey Tweak,

Thats odd, where are you located and did you modify the harness at all? For example was the 3 wire sensor harness extended?

Also where was this gauge purchased from?

Washington State and no, I

Washington State and no, I didn't modify the harness at all as it will reach its final location without issue. The gauge was purchased via Amazon and was listed as sold and shipped by amazon vs a third party (as I know that sometimes makes a difference for warranty and have been burned in the past). I do have general electronics experience so i'm more than happy to probe the gauge with my multimeter if you are able to provide any baseline resistance specs for me to reference. I can also do this through the wiring harness if that helps narrow down the issue.

also, just as a note, I have

also, just as a note, I have confirmed with low pressure air that the sensor does respond to pressure changes as expected, it just never goes back to 0 like my other AEM guages do, always just hovers around 3-4 PSI. This also applies with the car in accessory vs running, so the input voltage doesn't appear to impact this reading from waht I can see.

Quick update on this, I

Quick update on this, I bought a second gauge so I could test each part individually. The gauge itself is bad. I pluged the old gauge into the new wiring and sensor and it acts the same as it does on my car, swapped the guage and all my existing wiring and sensor work as expected. I'll be reutrning the old guage as defective. Hopefully just a fluke.

I'm glad you were able to figure this out.  I just installed my 3 xseries gauges and I'm having the same annoying issue with my AEM 30-0307 X-Series Oil Pressure Gauge.

It keeps showing 3 or 4 psi when the engine is off all the time.  I had to extend my harness because my oil pressure tap location is located on the oil filter housing just behind the radiator.  I used the same gauge wire and soldered and heat shrinked all of the connections.  The gauge seems to work fine with the engine on but the 3-4 psi of possible error is weird to me.  Can you help me out AEM?

Glad this helped someone else

Glad this helped someone else. Can't stand when I see a forum post with an issue identical to mine and no follow up on if it was ever resolved or not. Hopefully AEM can step up and help you out too.

I'm glad to report that AEM

I'm glad to report that AEM took care of me.  The oil pressure gauge was bad and replaced by AEM.  The oil press. sensor was deemed okay.  Thanks AEM.
